Video of the Week: Shallow Waters (RBN), Eating My Oxygen

This week's video is more Amberian Dawn! This time, Shallow Waters and as you can guess from the title it isn't an easy one.

Hardest problem I had was managing to sing that fast and high without that many chances to get a breath. Really really hard on that level. If you're doing the song in a lower octave though, it's a piece of cake. I played it in a lower octave the day it came out because I was a bit congested and I just didn't have it in me to try to sing it in a higher octave physically.

I did this song over and OVER and OVER again trying to make my struggle to breathe sound less obvious and it did indeed become easier the more I did it (yes, yes, I know practicing helps!) but still it's a killer.
Or it was for me anyway.

So yeah you will see me trying to stand very straight to maximize my lung capacity and inhaling really obviously, you might even hear it. I tried my best to not take a noisy breath, but hey.. I'm still human and I still have to breathe.

I really like this song, and I enjoy Amberian Dawn's guitar solos, but it's really boring to sit (or stand in my case) there and look/feel awkward in front of the camera when doing vocals... so I get a bit silly. Don't take it to mean though that I'm bored. I just feel weird.

Anyway here is the video.

  1. Gotta love your vocals :D Oh, and I heard-saw some loud breathing a couple of times but it was hardly note-worthy, lots of extremely talented singers (Tarja, Vibeke Stene and Sarah Brightman to mention a few) do it live, and it's all too often edited out in the studio. You need to rock out more though, that's what makes a good singer great :)

  2. Rocking out would be a convenient solution to the awkwardness problem, too, but I think it could cause trouble with the game.

By the way, I don't think I've seen Heidi rocking out a lot, either ...

Oh, and to touch a more peripheral point: You changed the design of your character and your band, right? Your character resembles yourself more strongly now and it looks as if your band is now all-female! The drummer really has a Xena look going about her, which is fitting enough given how physical the character is :D

  3. I randomly wonder which song is a greater challenge for your breathing technique: This one with its speed, or Sleeping Sun with its long sustained notes? I bet both are a bitch for not giving you much room and few occasions to catch your breath!

  4. @Aki: Well Rocking out would be more entertaining on camera that is for sure :p but yeah I just feel weird alone in my living room with a camera.. LOL

@Almagest: Yes the game doesn't like "rocking out". Example: Next week my video will be No Doubt- End It On This. Now.. I managed to get 100% on the song when singing it sorta flat, not all that interesting and kinda boring.
After I FCed it, I thought I was good to go back and sing it with enthusiasm, but I was wrong. I never managed to FC it while singing it with more emotion etc. It's a real limitation of the game :/

As for the character I actually have several in game. My Anex character (the one you're used to seeing), my "Me" character (the one I've been using more lately), a Rogue from X-Men (the one from back in the day that wasn't the crappy movie version), Storm (X-Men), Psylocke (also an X-Men character).

In this specific mode I can't choose my band members, they are randomly selected and can change in every song. However in the tour mode I can indeed set certain characters to every band member, but they would have to be ones I actually created. I don't have enough in game money (the career mode) to buy the clothes etc I would like to make a complete band that looks interesting. I would have to play through career mode a few times on EACH character to have money to make them look spiffy.

So the band thing there is unintentional ;)

Honestly.. I've done a crappy (as in it's not so great) karaoke of Sleeping Sun (on that karaoke play website) and I didn't find it hard.. The speed on Shallow Waters is more of a killer for me :/
